Australian Government Parental Leave Pay changes from 1 July 2024

Georgia Muegel • July 30, 2024

There are a few changes to the Australian Government’s Paid Parental Leave Scheme from 1 July 2024. Summarised below they are:

  • The total Parental Leave Pay available to families has increased to 22 weeks (or 110 days based on a 5 day work week). This has increased from a total of 20 weeks from 1 July 2023.
  • The payment is $183.16 a day before tax, or $915.80 per 5 day week. The payment amount is based on the national minimum wage which increased 3.75% on the previous year.
  • Some of your Parental Leave Pay will be reserved to share with your partner. The amount of days available to your partner to take is 10 days.
  • The period to claim Dad and Partner Pay closed on 30 June 2024.

Your child’s date of birth or adoption date determines how many days of Parental Leave Pay you can get. The scheme has been increasing the number of weeks/days of Parental Leave Pay from 1 July 2023 to 1 July 2026. Below outlines the future entitlements for families:

  • From 1 July 2025, a family can get up to 24 weeks (or 120 days based on a 5 day work week) with 15 days reserved for your partner.
  • From 1 July 2026, a family can get up to 26 weeks (or 130 days based on a 5 day work week) with 20 days reserved for your partner.

If you’re sharing the Parental Leave Pay days and your partner wants to use their reserved days, they must be used within 2 years of your child’s birth or adoption date.
